It was a well worth trip from Kilkenny to the Meadows in Lurgan for Mikey Pender, as he took the win in the second round of the Showjumping Ireland National Grand Prix and with it, the winners share of the £4,000 on offer. Riding Gortlettra Lou he lodged the winning round of double clear in 39.02 seconds. Owned by Bravo Hughes, the eight-year-old was bred by Patrick Duffy and is by Luidam out of the Clover Echo sired mare, Gortlettra Echo Rose. This combination had demonstrated its talent earlier in the month, when claiming victory in the TRM showjumpers Spring Tour in Barnadown. The gelding was bought by Marion last year from John Mulligan and was also campaigned by John Mc Entee.
A start list of 45 combinations lined out for the 1.40m class. Of these, 14 managed to produce a first-round clear over the Aaron Mc Cusker-designed track. It was a very competitive class, with 10 of those delivering double clears and just 0.13 of a second separated first and second place.
Claiming the runner-up spot was Deane Rogan who was riding another eight-year- old, De L’ Oiseliere. The combination answered all the questions in a time of 39.15. Owned by Declan Mcgarry and bred by S.C.E.A De L’ Oiseliere, the French bred gelding is by Kapitol D’ Argonne and out of Miss Flight.
Winner of Spring Tour in Cavan, Clem McMahon, was back in the ribbons, this time taking third with the Hilton Farm owned, Hilton Banner, when clear in 41.07.
Tim MacDonagh slotted into fourth with Holypark Galoway, when he kept all the poles in place in a time of 42.07.
A familiar face in the winner’s enclosure in the Meadows, Jonathan Smyth didn’t hang about with Mulvin Lights Out, and a clear in 42.86 saw him slot into fifth place.
Not content with the win, Mikey Pender returned to take sixth place with the eight-year-old,MHS Cardenta, when clear in 43.71. By Cardento out of Willow Point (Diamond Serpent), the mare is owned by Marion Hughes and was bred in Co Galway by show jumper Olive Clarke. This combination had also won a leg of the Spring Tour earlier in the month in Mullingar.
